Urbanization spawns a fast paced life, multiple income streams, proliferation of plastic money, breakup of the joint family system, cultural and social norms, leading to a shift from value systems. The outcome; consumer demand patterns are hovering towards convenience, resulting in multiple purchases of most items.

With rate of waste generation being far in excess of the rate of wealth creation there is a serious need to consider the impact therewith, on the very limited and finite resources available. Need for better waste management including recycling, waste to wealth programs etc. assume greater significance.

Since 1980’s one of the driving forces in shaping waste policy, along with many other aspects of life in society, has been the over arching goal of sustainable development.
